Zebra Plant

Autumn Bedroom Family & Genus
Oasislink Houseplant Editorial March 24, 2026 7 min read

Zebra plant is a bold, tropical, evergreen subshrub that’s loved for two things: glossy deep-green leaves dramatically etched with creamy-white “zebra” veins, and upright, long-lasting golden flower spikes. What looks like big yellow petals are actually bright bracts (modified leaves); the true flowers are smaller orange tubular blooms tucked between them. It’s often grown as a potted indoor ornamental—especially happy in warm, humid rooms with bright, indirect light—making it a showstopper for bathrooms, entryways, and bright corners that stay cozy.

Scientific Name Aphelandra squarrosa
Family / Genus Acanthaceae / Aphelandra
Origin Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil (tropical South America). Tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas (generalized in some sources).
Aliases Danyao Flower, Zebra Aphelandra
