White mulberry (Morus alba) is a tough, fast-growing deciduous tree—sometimes kept as a large shrub through pruning. It’s best known as the classic leaf food for silkworms (the backbone of traditional silk-making), but plant lovers also grow it as a hardy shade and street tree. Depending on the variety, it can produce sweet, edible mulberries that ripen from pale white to pink/red or deep purple-black, and the leaves and bark have a long history of practical and traditional uses. It’s remarkably adaptable, but it strongly prefers well-drained soil and dislikes sitting in water.
