Water pepper is a quick, easygoing annual wetland herb that loves damp ground—think stream edges, ditches, and rain-garden lows. It grows upright with lots of branching, carrying narrow, lance-shaped leaves that live up to the name: they have a distinctly hot, peppery bite. From late spring through summer it sends up (often slightly drooping) slender, spike-like flower clusters made of tiny greenish blooms that can blush white to pale pink, giving it a soft, natural look even though it’s a tough little survivor in wet places.

Scientific Name Persicaria hydropiper
Family / Genus Polygonaceae / Persicaria
Origin Widespread across China (north to south). Typically found on riverbanks, along ditches, and in wet valley habitats.
Aliases Biting Persicaria, Marshpepper Knotweed, Smartweed, Water-Pepper
