Variegated dwarf bamboo is a compact, ornamental bamboo best known for its bright, lengthwise white-to-pale-yellow striping. It forms a low, lush carpet through running rhizomes, making it a popular choice for edging, underplanting, and groundcover where you want a “bamboo vibe” without tall canes. It appreciates warm, humid conditions and does best in bright dappled light or partial shade—strong midday sun can scorch the pale striping. Compared with many bamboos, it’s notably cold-tolerant and generally easy to grow once established (as long as you keep an eye on its enthusiasm for spreading).

Scientific Name Pleioblastus fortunei
Family / Genus Poaceae / Pleioblastus
Origin Cultivated in East China.
Aliases Fortune's Bamboo, Groundcover Bamboo, Variegated Bamboo
