Tropical Pitcher Plant

Bathroom Bedroom Carnivorous Plants
admin March 24, 2026 5 min read

Tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes) are wonderfully strange carnivorous houseplants: each leaf can extend into a thin tendril that swells into a hanging “pitcher,” often flushed red to burgundy. Sweet nectar and vivid color lure insects to the rim; once they slip inside, they can’t climb back out and are slowly digested—an ingenious way for the plant to get nutrients in the impoverished, acidic soils where it evolved. They’re most often grown for their dramatic pitchers rather than their flowers, and they look especially spectacular in a hanging basket where the traps can dangle freely.

Family / Genus Nepenthaceae / Nepenthes
Origin Tropical regions of Southeast Asia (especially Borneo, Sumatra and the Philippines), with some species extending to Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka and northern Australia.
