Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a tough, warm-season perennial bunchgrass that forms handsome upright clumps with narrow, grass-green leaves. From summer into early fall, it sends up large, open, airy flower panicles that look almost like a soft cloud hovering above the foliage—one reason it’s beloved in naturalistic gardens. Beyond beauty, it’s a real workhorse plant too, often used for erosion control, windbreaks, and habitat-friendly landscapes thanks to its impressive adaptability.
