Sweet violet is a delightful, low-growing perennial best known for its famously sweet perfume and its dainty purple-to-violet-blue flowers that pop up in early spring. It forms soft mats of heart-shaped, deep green leaves and spreads gently by creeping runners, making it a lovely ground cover for shady, woodland-style gardens. Beyond its charm, the blooms (and young leaves) are edible and have a long tradition of use in teas, candies, and old-fashioned herbal remedies—bringing a little romance and history to the garden as well.
