Spiny sow-thistle (Sonchus asper) is a quick, easygoing annual in the daisy family that brings a pleasantly “wild” vibe wherever it pops up. It forms firm, lobed leaves that can feel a bit prickly, then sends up small, dandelion-like yellow flower heads for much of the warm season. Because it tolerates moist soils and readily colonizes disturbed ground, it can act like an informal, seasonal groundcover in naturalistic beds, path edges, slopes, and waterside plantings—just keep in mind it also self-sows enthusiastically if you let it.

Scientific Name Sonchus asper
Family / Genus Asteraceae / Sonchus
Origin Widely distributed across China; typically found on hillsides, woodland edges, and along watersides.
Aliases Prickly Sow-Thistle, Rough Sow-Thistle
