Society garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) is a cheerful, clump-forming bulbous perennial from South Africa that’s loved for its long season of starry lilac‑pink flowers and its surprisingly garlicky foliage. The narrow, grass-like leaves grow in tidy tufts and release a garlic/chive scent when crushed—great for curious gardeners, less great for anyone who likes totally scent-free plants. Upright stems rise above the foliage with airy umbels of small, star-shaped blooms, making it a reliable choice for borders, edging, and sunny containers, and it also works nicely as a cut flower.
