Shortawn foxtail is a petite annual grass with slender, smooth stems that often bend at the nodes, giving it a slightly “kneed” look. It naturally turns up along field edges and other moist ground, especially places that stay damp in spring and early summer. Its flower heads are compact, gray‑green cylinders—subtle from a distance, but up close the orange‑yellow anthers can be surprisingly eye-catching. In lightly managed, naturalistic plantings it may behave like a self-sowing filler or groundcover, though in agricultural areas it can be considered weedy.

Scientific Name Alopecurus aequalis
Family / Genus Poaceae / Alopecurus
Origin Native across much of China; typically found along field margins and in damp, seasonally wet places.
Aliases Equal Foxtail, Water Foxtail
