Shiny bugleweed is a tough, easygoing perennial wetland herb in the mint family. In nature it loves the edges of marshes, streams, and ditches, where its creeping rhizomes help it spread into bright green colonies. The leaves are glossy and lance-shaped, and in summer it puts on rings (whorls) of tiny white, tubular flowers around the stems. In many parts of East Asia, people traditionally harvest the tender young shoots and leaves in spring and summer as a seasonal wild green—best cooked, and only when you’re certain of identification and the site is clean.
