Seashore hibiscus (Hamabo) is a tough, deciduous small tree or large shrub with a dense, rounded crown and cheerful golden-yellow, bell-shaped flowers that keep coming for months. What makes it special is its superpower for seaside life: it shrugs off salty winds, saline-alkaline soils, and even periodic brackish or seawater flooding—making it a favorite for coastal parks, salty roadsides, and hard-working urban greening where other flowering shrubs struggle.

Scientific Name Hibiscus hamabo
Family / Genus Malvaceae / Hibiscus
Origin Native to coastal islands of eastern and southeastern China (notably the Zhoushan Archipelago in Zhejiang and coastal islands of Fujian). It naturally grows on seaside saline-alkaline ground and has also been introduced and cultivated in parts of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin.
