Saucer magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana) is a beloved deciduous small tree that puts on a spectacular early-spring show of oversized, goblet-to-saucer-shaped blooms. The flowers are typically pink to purple on the outside and white within, often lightly fragrant, and they appear before (or just as) the leaves emerge—so the whole tree looks like it’s been covered in pastel cups. It’s widely planted as a standout specimen for lawns, courtyards, parks, and streetscapes, especially where soil drains well.

Scientific Name Magnolia × soulangeana
Family / Genus Magnoliaceae / Magnolia
Origin A garden-origin hybrid first raised in cultivation in France (from Magnolia denudata × Magnolia liliiflora). Now widely cultivated across China, from the Beijing region south to Guangdong, east to coastal areas, and west to places such as Lanzhou (Gansu) and Kunming (Yunnan).
Aliases Chinese Saucer Magnolia, Soulange's Magnolia, Tulip Magnolia
