Rungia pectinata (孩儿草) is a slender, delicate-looking annual herb that often pops up naturally along field edges, slopes, and around villages in warm parts of southern China. Much of the plant is softly hairy, and its stems commonly sprawl along the ground near the base, with slightly swollen nodes that can blush purplish-red. The leaves grow in opposite pairs, and the plant sends up small, one-sided, spike-like flower clusters. The blooms are usually white with a faint lilac tint, followed by a tiny, smooth seed capsule about 3 mm (0.12 in) long. It’s the kind of plant that looks right at home in a relaxed, meadowy, woodland-edge planting where you let nature do a little of the design work.
