admin March 24, 2026 7 min read

Rieger begonia is a compact, bloom-packed begonia that’s famous for bringing cheerful color when many houseplants are taking a break. Grown mainly as an indoor (or sheltered patio/balcony) pot plant, it loves bright filtered light, steady moisture (never soggy), and comfortable, cool-warm temperatures. With good light and a little deadheading, it can flower for a long stretch from winter into spring—making it a classic gift plant and a star for windowsills and hanging baskets.

Scientific Name Begonia × hiemalis (Elatior Group)
Family / Genus Begoniaceae / Begonia
Origin A cultivated, man-made hybrid group (often sold as Begonia × hiemalis / Elatior Group; sometimes labeled Begonia elatior) bred specifically for ornamental pot culture rather than occurring as a wild species.
