Purple Pitcher Plant

Autumn Carnivorous Plants Child Safe
admin March 24, 2026 5 min read

Purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) is a famously cold-hardy, carnivorous bog perennial that grows as a low rosette of squat, pitcher-shaped leaves. The richly colored pitchers—often green flushed with deep wine-red or burgundy and marked with darker veining—collect rainwater and entice insects inside, where they’re trapped and gradually digested. In spring, it adds another layer of drama by sending up nodding, solitary flowers above the pitchers in moody maroon to reddish-purple tones, sometimes leaning rosy pink depending on the form and growing conditions. It’s a standout choice for outdoor bog gardens, patio bog pots, and sunny balconies in cooler climates.
