Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida) is a tender, evergreen perennial grown and loved for its intensely purple, sword-like leaves and easygoing nature. It forms a low, trailing mat of fleshy stems that readily root wherever the nodes touch soil—great for ground cover, spilling from pots, or cascading from hanging baskets. In warm weather it dots itself with small, three-petaled flowers in pink to pale purple, each one short-lived (often opening in the morning and fading by midday), but produced over a long season. Give it bright light for the richest purple color, and it will reward you with fast growth and a bold, modern look indoors or out.
