Prostrate Spurge

Autumn Family & Genus Fast Growing

Prostrate spurge is a tough little Euphorbia that hugs the ground and quickly makes a low, spreading mat. Its slender stems often blush purplish-red and fork again and again near the base, weaving through soil, rocks, and even cracks in walls. The small opposite leaves are modest, but the plant’s tiny “flowers” are classic Euphorbia—minute cup-like cyathia tucked into the leaf axils. Loved (and sometimes cursed) for its resilience, it’s adaptable in poor soils and dry spells, and it’s also mentioned in traditional herbal contexts (use caution and seek professional guidance before any medicinal use).

Scientific Name Euphorbia humifusa
Family / Genus Euphorbiaceae / Euphorbia
Origin Widely distributed in northern, eastern, south-central, and southwestern China; commonly found in open woodland, on walls, and on rocky places, and also cultivated.
Aliases Ground Spurge, Humifuse Spurge
