Polka dot plant is a compact, colorful houseplant loved for its green, heart- to oval-shaped leaves splashed and blotched with pink, red, or creamy-white. Despite the name, many varieties show bold painterly patches rather than tidy “dots.” In warm, bright conditions it may produce small magenta-to-purple flowers in summer, but most people grow it for the foliage—and often pinch off blooms to keep the leaves looking their best. It’s especially charming in terrariums, glass jars, and small pots.

Scientific Name Hypoestes phyllostachya
Family / Genus Acanthaceae / Hypoestes
Origin Madagascar (widely cultivated and naturalized in some tropical regions).
Aliases Flamingo Plant, Freckle Face Plant, Measles Plant
