Pinellia ternata is a small, tuber-forming perennial in the arum family that naturally tucks itself into cool, damp shade—think woodland edges, streambanks, and moist understory. It stays modest in size but can slowly form little clumps, making it a gentle, natural-looking groundcover. One of its charming quirks is that its leaves often change as it matures: younger growth may look simple and undivided, while older plants frequently show a distinctive three-lobed (or three-segmented) look. In early summer it produces a classic arum-style bloom—a green spathe wrapped around a spadix. Beyond the garden, it’s also famous in East Asian herbal traditions, where the tuber is used only after proper processing and with professional guidance.
