Philippine violet (Viola philippica) is a tough little perennial that hugs the ground in neat basal rosettes and rewards you with a surprisingly long parade of violet blooms. From spring well into late summer, it sends up purple-blue to pale lavender flowers (and very occasionally white). It’s cold-hardy, adaptable, and—if it gets steady moisture—will happily naturalize into small colonies, making it a charming, low-maintenance groundcover for borders, woodland edges, and lightly shaded gardens. In some regions, the very young leaves have also been traditionally foraged as a wild green (only when confidently identified and harvested from clean areas).

Scientific Name Viola philippica
Family / Genus Violaceae / Viola

It grows in fields, wasteland, grassy slopes, woodland edges, and scrub, and often forms small colonies in moist garden spots.
