Paper mulberry is a tough, fast-growing deciduous tree with pale gray bark and softly hairy young shoots. Its leaves are famously variable—often egg-shaped with coarse teeth, sometimes unlobed and sometimes irregularly lobed—yet they’re usually easy to recognize by their soft, fuzzy feel. It’s a sun-lover that adapts to everything from dry, poor ground to periodically damp sites. Female trees form round, bright orange to orange-red clustered fruits that birds adore—beautiful in parks and naturalistic plantings, but potentially messy on busy sidewalks.

Scientific Name Broussonetia papyrifera
Family / Genus Moraceae / Broussonetia
Origin Native across much of China (north to south). Commonly found wild or planted near villages on wasteland, field margins, and along ditches.
