Pale persicaria (Polygonum lapathifolium) is a fast-growing annual knotweed that often pops up along field edges, in disturbed ground, and even around rice paddies. It grows upright with branching stems and narrow, lance-shaped leaves that frequently show a distinctive dark, crescent-shaped blotch—an easy “tell” when you’re trying to identify it. In summer, it sends up dense, spike-like clusters of tiny pale pink to whitish flowers, followed by glossy, dark fruits. Tough, adaptable, and quick to complete its life cycle, it can act like a casual, naturalistic summer groundcover wherever the soil is periodically disturbed—whether it’s on the damp side or dries out between rains.

Scientific Name Polygonum lapathifolium
Family / Genus Polygonaceae / Polygonum
Origin Widespread across northern and southern China; commonly found in dry fields, rice paddies, and along field margins.
Aliases Dock-Leaved Knotweed, Nodding Smartweed, Pale Smartweed
