Orchard grass is a tuft-forming, cool-season perennial that makes a relaxed, meadowy clump of arching leaves topped with airy, branched flower heads. It’s a classic “woodland edge” and naturalistic planting grass—vigorous, adaptable, and attractive in motion—plus it’s famously useful as a forage and hay grass. In the right spot it can self-seed, so it’s best treated as a friendly but energetic garden guest.

Scientific Name Dactylis glomerata
Family / Genus Poaceae / Dactylis
Origin In China it occurs in places such as Xinjiang and Sichuan, typically along forest edges, in shrubland, and on grassy mountain slopes; it is also scattered on the southeastern slopes of the Greater Khingan Range.
Aliases Cat Grass, Cocksfoot
