Opium poppy is a striking flowering plant with big, silky blooms that look like crumpled tissue paper. Flowers usually appear as single, showy cups in shades of red, pink, purple, white, and sometimes orange, followed by rounded seed pods full of tiny edible seeds. It’s famous for two very different reasons: as a beloved ornamental and culinary seed crop, and as the natural source of opium alkaloids (including morphine and codeine), which makes it medically important but also legally restricted in many places.
