Okra is a sun-loving, warm-season annual in the mallow family (the same big group as hibiscus). Gardeners grow it mainly for its tender, edible pods, but it’s also surprisingly ornamental: tall upright stems carry large, palmately lobed leaves and beautiful hibiscus-like flowers—usually soft yellow with a purple-maroon center—followed by ridged, tapered green pods. In real heat it can grow fast and keep producing for weeks, but it dislikes cold and soggy soil.
