Korean weigela (Weigela coraeensis) is a vigorous, deciduous flowering shrub that puts on a classic spring show. Its trumpet-shaped blooms appear in clusters, opening a soft pale pink and gradually deepening into richer red or purplish-red tones as they age—so one plant can look multicolored in peak season. It’s an easy landscape workhorse for borders, slopes, and mass plantings, happily tolerating average (even somewhat poor) soils, but it truly shines in deep, fertile, evenly moist soil with excellent drainage. If it has one pet peeve, it’s wet feet: waterlogging is the fastest way to make this shrub unhappy.

Scientific Name Weigela coraeensis
Family / Genus Caprifoliaceae / Weigela
Origin Widely distributed; forms natural colonies in the upper areas of Mount Lushan (Jiangxi). Hardy outdoors in regions with winters comparable to areas south of Beijing.
