Japanese ternstroemia (Ternstroemia gymnanthera) is a handsome broadleaf evergreen that grows as a dense shrub or small tree with a naturally rounded, layered crown. Its thick, glossy, dark-green leaves look polished all year, and in late spring into summer it offers pale yellow, sweetly fragrant flowers—often gathered near the tips of the shoots—followed by nearly spherical fruits framed by persistent sepals. It’s a quietly classy landscape plant, especially for entrances, path corners, lawn edges, and woodland-style garden planting.
