Japanese Sweet Flag

Bathroom Bedroom Family & Genus
admin March 25, 2026 4 min read

Japanese sweet flag (Acorus gramineus) is a compact, clump-forming, pleasantly aromatic plant with narrow, grass-like leaves. It loves cool, consistently moist conditions and shines as an easy, stylish accent in pots, at pond edges, and in any damp, shaded corner of the garden. If you can keep it from drying out, it will reward you with tidy evergreen-looking tufts (especially in mild climates) and a fresh scent that can even linger on your hands after touching the foliage.

Scientific Name Acorus gramineus
Family / Genus Acoraceae / Acorus
Origin Widely cultivated across China; typically grows in wet places such as marshy ground or among rocks by water.
Aliases Dwarf Sweet Flag, Grass-Leaved Sweet Flag, Miniature Sweet Flag
