Japanese Spindle

Air Purifying Autumn Family & Genus
March 24, 2026

Japanese spindle is a tough, evergreen shrub (sometimes trained into a small tree) loved for its thick, glossy leaves and its “always tidy” look. In late spring it produces small greenish-white flowers, followed by decorative pinkish capsules that split open to show bright orange-red arils—an eye-catching seasonal bonus. It’s famously tolerant of heavy pruning, making it a classic hedge and topiary plant, and it holds up well in challenging urban conditions, including dust and pollution.
