Japanese quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) is a tough, deciduous, thorny shrub loved for its early-spring blossoms that often open on bare branches before the leaves appear. Flowers cluster along older wood, creating a bright spring show in shades that can range (by cultivar) from red and orange to pink or white. After flowering, it can set fragrant, quince-like fruits—usually too astringent to enjoy raw, but wonderfully aromatic and commonly cooked or processed (and also used in some traditional wellness practices). With dense, spiny branches, it’s also a natural choice for a barrier hedge or for clipping into neat rounded forms in the garden.
