Japanese Mock Orange

Air Purifying Autumn Family & Genus

Japanese mock orange (海桐) is a tough, good-looking evergreen shrub (sometimes trained into a small tree) with a naturally dense, rounded shape and glossy, leathery leaves. In spring it produces clusters of small, starry white flowers with a rich, sweet fragrance; as the blooms age they often mellow into a creamy yellow. By autumn, rounded seed capsules split open to show off bright red, sticky seeds—an unexpectedly colorful finale. It’s famously adaptable: happy in many soils, tolerant of coastal conditions, and unusually comfortable in city air, making it a reliable choice for hedges, screens, and containers.
