Japanese blueberry tree (杜英) is a handsome evergreen valued for its dense, glossy canopy and its subtle “surprise” color—here and there, older leaves often blush a rich red and linger among the green. In early summer it produces drooping clusters of small, delicate flowers whose petal tips are finely fringed like threads, followed later by ellipsoid, drupe-like fruits (not true berries). It’s a popular landscape and street tree in warm, humid regions thanks to its tidy look, strong roots, and excellent tolerance of pruning and city air.

Family / Genus Elaeocarpaceae / Elaeocarpus
Origin Native to southern and southeastern China (including Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Yunnan, and southern Guizhou) and Taiwan.
