Japanese Aralia

Autumn Bedroom Family & Genus
Oasislink Houseplant Editorial March 24, 2026 5 min read

Japanese aralia is a famously tough, shade-tolerant foliage plant prized for its large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves that stay handsome even in lower light. Most plants are a rich, deep green, but you’ll also find striking variegated cultivars—these need brighter (still indirect) light to keep their patterns crisp. When the plant is mature, it can surprise you in autumn with rounded clusters of tiny creamy-white flowers, sometimes followed by dark berries. It’s an excellent “big-leaf” statement plant that’s forgiving for beginners indoors, and equally happy outdoors in a sheltered, shady spot in mild climates.
