Irises are classic, show-stopping perennial flowers named after Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow—and once you see the color range, you’ll understand why. Their signature blooms have six petal-like segments: three upright “standards” and three gently drooping “falls,” often patterned or marked like watercolor. Many garden favorites (especially bearded irises) also feature a soft, fuzzy “beard” on the falls. Add in elegant, sword-shaped leaves that form tidy fans, and you’ve got a plant that looks refined even when it isn’t flowering.
