Hinoki cypress is a graceful evergreen conifer known for its neat, spire-like silhouette and rich, reddish-brown bark. Its foliage forms dense, flattened sprays of thick, blunt-tipped scales, sometimes showing a slightly pale or whitish cast underneath. Over time it produces small, rounded cones that mature to a warm reddish-brown. Loved in gardens as a refined specimen or screening tree, it’s also famous for its wonderfully fragrant, durable timber—one of the reasons it holds such a special place in Japanese building and woodworking traditions.

Scientific Name Chamaecyparis obtusa

Origin Native to Japan; widely cultivated elsewhere in temperate regions. (The source text mentions it being common in the middle–lower Yangtze region, which is best understood as a cultivated/naturalized distribution rather than the species' origin.)
