Hardy Rubber Tree (Eucommia ulmoides) is a tough, deciduous tree with a rounded, egg-shaped crown and an especially fun party trick: if you carefully tear a fresh leaf, you can often spot fine, stretchy “rubber” threads. Its flowers are small and not showy, appearing in early spring around the time the leaves are just starting to wake up. Later in the season it forms flat, winged fruits (samaras) that mature in autumn.

Scientific Name Eucommia ulmoides
Family / Genus Eucommiaceae / Eucommia
Origin Native to central and southern China (including Shaanxi, Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Guangxi, and Zhejiang). It grows in open woodland on low mountains, valleys, and gentle slopes, and can also establish on rocky cliffs. It is widely cultivated across China and has been introduced to botanical gardens in Europe and North America, where it is sometimes called the “Chinese rubber tree” despite being unrelated to the true rubber tree (Hevea).
