Hardy orange (Poncirus trifoliata) is a tough little citrus cousin famous for its fierce thorns and distinctive three-part (trifoliate) leaves. In late spring it produces bright white, citrus-scented blossoms—often appearing before the leaves fully open—followed by round to pear-shaped fruits that ripen to a dull yellow in autumn. The fruit smells pleasantly citrusy but is extremely bitter, which is why this plant is better loved as an ornamental, a security hedge, and a cold-hardy rootstock for other citrus.
