Hardy banana (Musa basjoo) is a bold, clump-forming perennial banana grown mainly for its dramatic, oversized leaves. It creates a trunk-like “pseudostem” (not true wood) from tightly wrapped leaf bases, giving it a tropical, tree-like silhouette. In summer it can produce upright banana-style flower spikes with reddish-brown bracts, and it may set fruit later on—but the fruits are typically packed with hard seeds and aren’t considered edible, so this plant is loved for its lush foliage rather than harvest.

Scientific Name Musa basjoo
Family / Genus Musaceae / Musa
Origin Native to the Ryukyu Islands (Japan); widely cultivated in East Asia and elsewhere as an ornamental.
