Glossy Privet

Family & Genus Fast Growing Flowering Plants

Glossy privet is a fast-growing, evergreen tree loved for its thick, shiny dark-green leaves and big, sweetly fragrant sprays of creamy-white flowers in summer. After flowering it sets oval, purple-black berries that often look lightly “powdered” with a pale waxy bloom. Because it keeps a tidy crown, responds brilliantly to pruning, and handles a range of conditions, it’s widely used for streets, parks, screens, and shaped hedges—though in some regions it can also spread beyond gardens.

Scientific Name Ligustrum lucidum
Family / Genus Oleaceae / Ligustrum
Origin Native to China, occurring from the Yangtze River region south through South China and into the southwest, extending northwest to Shaanxi and Gansu. Typically found in valleys, shrubland, and dense woodland.
