Fringed iris (Iris japonica) is a charming, clump-forming perennial that slowly spreads by rhizomes, creating neat fans of glossy, dark green, strap-like leaves. In early spring it sends up slender stems topped with airy clusters of pale blue to blue‑violet blooms, each petal beautifully frilled along the edges—giving the flowers a delicate, lacy look. It’s a favorite for naturalistic borders and woodland-edge plantings because it’s happy in sun to light shade, enjoys consistent moisture, and is notably more tolerant of mildly alkaline or slightly saline soils than many ornamentals.

Scientific Name Iris japonica
Family / Genus Iridaceae / Iris
Origin Widespread in China; typically found on moist, partially shaded grassy slopes, in open woodland, or along woodland edges.
