False indigo-bush is a tough, deciduous shrub in the pea family that earns its keep with upright spikes of rich purple flowers and an easygoing nature. It handles cold winters, dry spells, poor or disturbed soils, and even short-term flooding better than many landscape shrubs. Like other legumes, it partners with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which can gradually improve soil—one reason it’s often planted for restoration work and erosion control. After flowering, it forms drooping, slightly curved brown seed pods.
