False holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus) is a handsome evergreen shrub or small tree loved for its tough, glossy leaves that often look like holly—especially on young growth where the leaf edges can be sharply spined. In late autumn to early winter it surprises you with clusters of tiny, white, intensely fragrant flowers tucked into the leaf axils, making it a wonderfully “quiet” plant that delivers big scent when much of the garden is winding down. It’s a classic choice for hedges and screens, foundation planting, woodland-edge gardens, and even bonsai, offering year-round structure with a seasonal burst of perfume.

Scientific Name Osmanthus heterophyllus
Family / Genus Oleaceae / Osmanthus
Origin Native to Taiwan and Japan; now widely cultivated as an ornamental.
