Earth star (Cryptanthus bivittatus) is a charming, compact bromeliad that stays low to the soil and forms a crisp, star-shaped rosette. Its stiff, wavy leaves are boldly striped in burgundy red and creamy white—like a living pinwheel—and the color gets richest in brighter light. From above it can look a bit spider-like, which makes it a fun focal plant for mixed pots and dish gardens. Mature rosettes may produce small white summer flowers tucked near the center, but the foliage is the real star of the show.
