Dawn redwood is a fast-growing, deciduous conifer celebrated as a “living fossil.” It grows into a tall, graceful tree with soft, feathery needle-like foliage that emerges bright green in spring, deepens through summer, then glows orange-yellow to coppery red in autumn before dropping—making it a favorite for parks, avenues, and waterside landscapes where it has room to stretch.

Scientific Name Metasequoia glyptostroboides
Family / Genus Cupressaceae / Metasequoia
Origin Native to central China, with natural populations historically documented around Lichuan (Hubei), Shizhu (Chongqing/Sichuan region), and parts of western Hunan (e.g., Longshan and Sangzhi). Now widely planted across China and internationally as an ornamental tree.
