Common evening primrose is a tough, sun-loving biennial wildflower with a neat first-year leaf rosette and a dramatic second-year flowering stalk. In summer, it sends up tall stems lined with bright yellow, four-petaled blooms that often open toward evening—one of those garden moments that feels a little magical. It’s famously unfussy, coping well with dry, sandy, low-fertility soils, and it’s also grown for its seed oil (evening primrose oil).

Scientific Name Oenothera biennis
Family / Genus Onagraceae / Oenothera
Origin Native to North America, especially eastern Canada and the eastern United States. Widely cultivated and naturalized in many regions; often found in sandy riverbanks, dunes, disturbed ground, and open slopes.
Aliases Evening Primrose, Evening-Primrose, Common Evening Primrose
