Citron daylily is a tough, cheerful perennial that grows in expanding clumps from fleshy, swollen roots. It forms arching, strap-like leaves at the base, and in summer it sends up leafless, branched flower stalks topped with several fragrant, sunny-yellow, funnel-shaped blooms (each with six tepals). After flowering, it can set oval seed capsules. Gardeners love it for its reliability, and cooks value it for its edible flower buds—often dried and sold as “golden needles.”
