Chinese redbud (Cercis chinensis) is a charming deciduous shrub or small tree famous for its early-spring “burst of confetti” bloom—clusters of rosy pink to purplish flowers that can pop straight from bare branches (and sometimes even older wood) before the leaves fully unfold. After the floral show, it forms flattened green pods that later mature and carry glossy dark seeds. In gardens it’s loved for being easy to shape and surprisingly tolerant of pruning, making it equally happy as a multi-stemmed shrub or a small, single-trunk tree. Beyond ornament, its fine-grained wood has traditionally been used on a small scale for furniture and simple construction.

Scientific Name Cercis chinensis
Family / Genus Fabaceae / Cercis
Origin Native to southeastern China; commonly planted in courtyards, beside houses, temples, and along streets, with some plants occurring in dense woodland or limestone areas.
