Chinese mugwort (Artemisia argyi) is a strongly fragrant perennial herb—sometimes looking a bit shrubby—that forms sturdy, clump-like growth. Its thick, papery leaves often look silvery-gray because of fine hairs and tiny oil glands. Loved for its bold aroma, it’s a classic “useful plant” in daily life: grown for folk traditions, traditional herbal practice, and even practical home uses like natural scenting and insect deterrence. In some regions, the tender young shoots are also enjoyed as a seasonal vegetable.

Scientific Name Artemisia argyi
Family / Genus Asteraceae / Artemisia
Origin Widespread across much of China, absent mainly from extremely arid and very high-cold regions. Common at low to mid elevations in wasteland, roadsides, riverbanks, hillsides, forest-steppe and meadow habitats; locally it can be a dominant species in plant communities.
Aliases Argyi Mugwort, Chinese Wormwood, Mugwort
