Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata) is a graceful, clump-forming fern loved for its narrow, finger-like, feathered fronds held on wiry dark stems. It makes a lush, airy mound in a pot and can also look spectacular in a hanging basket where the arching fronds can drape and spread. Give it bright, filtered light (not harsh sun), keep the potting mix evenly moist but never waterlogged, and aim for comfortable humidity—then it stays tidy and green with just occasional grooming and a refresh of soil every couple of years. You may also come across variegated forms, often showing a pale stripe down the center of each leaflet.

Scientific Name Pteris vittata
Family / Genus Pteridaceae / Pteris
Origin Native to the Old World tropics and subtropics (widely naturalized elsewhere). Tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World; now widely naturalized in warm areas worldwide.
